What I Missed (And You May Have Missed Too)
Going back to the school as a working adult is tough. Beyond tough. It sucks your energy, your focus, and your drive. And yet I still chose to do it. To make it even more challenging (because why not? In for a penny, in for a pound, or something something), I took a summer semester. Summer semester means accelerated classes. That means squeezing months of lectures and materials to two months. For a middle age student who is also working full time job with a long commute, that meant using every bubble of time to study, complete homework, and do tests.
That also meant that there were many, many things that landed in the inbox that I was not able to devote my attention to. And it happens, sometimes there’s not much room to focus on other matters. Now that the semester has concluded and there is a brief break before the next term begins, there is some time to check out what I missed.
[Anime] Nyaight of the Living Cat
This isn’t too bad of a miss as the anime is still ongoing on Crunchyroll. This cute-apocalypse anime debuted on July 6.
In the year 20xx, something happens that jumpstarts the descent of humanity. Every time a person touches a cat, that human will turn into a cat., Human survival will crumble under the pressure of how cute power of cats. For how could anyone bear to hurt such furry beasts?
The anime is pretty much a direct refection of the goofy manga series just with more sci-fi reference jokes. It’s the most light hearted entertainment for those who enjoy human destruction.
[Movie] Sister Midnight (2025)
Completely missed by Squeedar was the debut of a dark comedy movie from Indian filmmaker Karan Kandhari.
Synopsis: rebellious small-town misfit Uma (acclaimed Indian actress Radhika Apte) arrives in Mumbai to find herself totally unsuited to life as a housewife. At odds with her prying neighbors and under the constant oppressive noise and heat of the city, she decides to break free from the shackles of domesticity and follow her own path in this bold, unpredictable, and darkly funny debut
Movies of women defying suffocating societal norms and being filmed with some Wes Anderson aesthetic? Cannot believe this one was missed.
Look at the movie poster painted by James Paterson that is inspired by TAXI DRIVER. That speaks so much volumes on what to expect with Sister Midnight.
[Youtube Series] Episode 6 of the Anime Business
Since February 2025, AnimEigo and MediaOCD released the first of an ongoing documentary series featuring industry interviews with those who helped pioneer the Western anime industry. The first interviewed featured John O’Donnell, former Managing Director of Central Park Media. This is a great history for those who are curious about the growth of anime distribution from the perspective of those were responsible for doing so. The series may also introduce viewers to anime from the 80’s that are only being released to current audiences..
Episode 6 was released in July and features Laurence Guinness, British producer for Manga Video/Video Entertainment.
Some interesting points from the interview:
he launched a pirate TV station in the UK before joining Island Records as a video editor
Was recruited by Andy Grain to join Manga Entertainment
He has helped produced home media releases for anime titles like Ghost In the Shell, Perfect Blue, and Street Fighter
He shares stories like recruiting the band Bush to score the soundtrack for The Guyver and attempts to produce anime featuring Wu Tang Clan and The Spice Girls
